The Dolores H. Janifer Memorial Scholarship Fund
The scholarship fund of the “Outstanding” Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is administered by the Harford County Z-HOPE Foundation (the charitable arm of Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter). The fund is named in honor of Zeta Soror Dolores H. Jenifer who passed away in June 2000. She was a charter member of Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter and its first president. Her entire career was devoted to educating young people on the secondary level. Therefore, it is most fitting that the chapter has chosen to name the scholarship fund in her memory.
For many years, she taught in the Baltimore City Public School System, and after retiring, she continued using her skills to teach homebound students in Harford County. When Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter adopted the Roye-Williams Elementary School in Havre de Grace, Maryland, she immediately volunteered her time there in the Media Center. She participated in many humanitarian activities and generously contributed financially to numerous others.
Dolores H. Janifer Memorial Scholarships are presented annually to Harford County high school seniors or graduates who are pursing a college degree or a certificate from an accredited technical school. Applicants may be current high school seniors, current college students, or current technical school students. Complete applications are judged on three elements: Scholarship, Character, and Financial Need. The awards are non-renewable grants. The application is available here.
The Dolores H. Janifer Memorial Scholarship Fund shall for many years, henceforth, stand as a monument to the energetic wisdom of Zeta Soror Dolores H. Janifer. The chapter is proud to have been the recipient of her world class service and tireless talents. The chapter is delighted at the opportunity to perpetuate her memory with a vehicle that meant so much to her during her lifetime. Even though the sorority's international community service initiate, called Z-HOPE: Zetas Helping Other People Excel, came on the scene after she became a triumphant Zeta Soror, she had long ago became the epitome of the ideals of Z-HOPE.
